The view was impressive, with distant specks soon turning into trees. Freedom is key with players able to make their own way down the four sizeable mountains. Shaun White? No, me neither but the game - a fun mix of Tony Hawks and SSX - deserves some attention. Perhaps the biggest surprise was Shaun White's Snowboarding. I'm still keen on WW2 games but this just felt a little flat to me. Less exciting was Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway. Again online could be key here, with the 4-player co-op sounding very impressive. Hawx was no different, with the relatively unimpressive city graphics not helping either. Modern day sims just seem to be a case of firing missiles at dots. WW1 classic Knights of the Sky and most of the WW2 games at least felt like you were actually fighting something physical. I've always had a problem with any flight combat game set in the modern day. Hawx was less impressive, although that could be me. Think dusty browns, swaying trees, lots of grass. Set in Africa, clearly the game setting of the moment, Far Cry 2 looked gorgeous. BGE2 is definitely one to watch for 2009. For a reasonable price, I'm definitely thinking that Philips may be able to get my money on this one if developer support continues to flow in.Far Cry 2 was the highlight of Ubidays, game publisher Ubisoft's recent product event, but Beyond Good and Evil 2, shown in teaser trailer form, may be more important in the long run. While only the PC versions will support amBX, Philips did note that console versions would be coming soon. This is just the start of the alliance between amBX and Ubisoft and the level of our comarketing with Ubisoft will underline our dedication to bringing all-new ambient effects to world class games. The chief operations officer of the amBX branch of Philips, Jo Cooke, spoke about the technology and the newfound developer support:īrothers in Arms: Hell's Highway and Far Cry 2 are titles that will showcase just how powerful and in your face amBX effects can be in a war game. Playing with the sound up and the lights off is great, but imagine playing with the sound up, the lights off, and various sweeping lighting effects and strobes with each gunshot or explosion. The combination of a high-profile sound system with a unique sensory output that is directly related to the game being played seems like a great evolution of physical immersion for gaming. Philip's novel amBX has long been a fascinating product to me.
